Untitled (Creature) By Zdzislaw Beksinski
Zdzislaw Bekinski was born and raised in Sanok, Poland in 1929. He witnessed numerous occupations of his home country throughout World War I-II, as well as the execution of Jewish people around him through Nazi concentration camps. The rampant antisemitism and brutality surrounding Beksinski at this time created a deep despair in him, as he lived out some of the worst acts of humanity. His experience living in a war torn Poland as a jewish man caused him to express his feeling through painting. Beksinski’s paintings are bleak and disturbing, showing destroyed cities, nightmarish creatures, and general dystopian hellscapes.
According to Beksinski “he wishes to paint in such a manner as if I was photographing dreams”. This quote makes me think of the traumatic experiences he witnessed to have dreams as dark as his paintings. His version of surrealism is unlike any other I’ve seen, because of his lived experiences. I’ts a step into the mind of someone who has seen the worst, and its reflected onto his psyche.
