Star Maker by Remedios VaroApril 14 2024Papilla Estelar (Star Maker) is a painting by surrealist artist Remedios Varo. During the Spanish Civil War varo was exiled out of Spain, causing her to move to Paris, and eventually Mexico during World War II. The art community in Mexico did not welcome European artists, making her feel isolated and trapped. Her struggles with this isolation are reflected in this painting featuring a woman in a small, enclosed tower feeding processed stardust to a moon in a cage. The stardust represents dreams, and hopes; as she feeds the moon her desires are transformed into opportunity, showing that even under depressing circumstance it is important to remain hopeful.
