Jean Paul Gaultier Spring/Summer 2007Feb 11 2024

In 2007’s Spring/Summer’s collection by Jean Paul Gaultier, he uses catholic iconography to compare the fashion to religion. Taking inspiration by gothic and renensaince art, he shows how the worship of religious idols is akin to how people worship fashion. Each piece is adorned with gold, silver accents, stained glass, and images of luxuruious religious art conveying that the opulence of these garments is what seperates mortals from godliness. Each model wears a halo-like headress furthering the theme that because of the clothes they wear, the designer their branding, they are worshipped like goddesses.

I really love this show because of the theme. It’s playfully poking fun at consumers of high fashion, as well as the industry. I also think the pieces in this collection are just beautiful. I adore catholic art and take heavy inspiration from it in my own work, so seeing the motifs I love transformed into wearable garments is just perfect to me. Chef’s kiss!
