Butcher Bunny by Mark RydenApril 14 2024
The Butcher Bunny (2000) is an oil painting by pop surrealist artist Mark Ryden. It shows a young girl with a miniture Abraham Lincoln walking into a bunny’s meat shop. Jesus in seen on the meat display welcoming them in to buy and eat the meat sold. Mark Ryden uses meat imagery, as well as religious imagery frequently throughout his art. In this painting, the butcher’s shop represents the Christian ritual Eucarist. Eurcharist/Holy Communion is when followers of Christ consume the body of christ through bread and wine to celebrate his sacrifices on the cross. This painting is a more literal interpretation of this ceremony, as the meat is directly shown.
I really love this painting because of how unique and cute it is. It has a lot of references to vintage toys like the rushton rubberface rabbit chopping the meat, and the smilling cartoon clock. Stylistically, its very pleasing and shows a lighter playful take on the surrealist aesthetic.
