In 1962, Dutch former medical student Dr, Bart Hughes “discovered” that an individual’s conscious state is dependent on the blood volume in their brain. According to Hughes, evolving to walk upright caused humans’ flow of blood in the brain to be limited by gravity, in turn causing the capabilities of our minds to be limited. Parts of our brains associated with speech and reasoning overcompensate the parts lost due to gravity. Hughes states that balancing the blood volume ratio causes an enlightened state similar to psychedelics. The enlightened state caused by trepanation is that of childlike bliss, simulating how babies experience the world due to their skulls not being developed. Hughes’ discovery led to a new age movement of artists, writers, and enlightenment seekers to drill holes in their head in order to reach blood volume nirvana.
There have been tons of media documenting the stories of trepanners, most notably the Bore Hole by Joseph Mellen, a first hand account of Mellen’s “perma-high” by self trepanation, as well as Heartbeat in the Brain, a formally lost documentary showing trepanation advocate Amanda Feilding’s trepanning in detail. The photo set of Bart Hughes trepanning himself is morbid yet fascinating. This man is a true believer in his research, going to the lengths of making himself into a guinea pig to affirm his theories. Its disturbing that people would do this to themselves without adequate research, and even more disturbing that the actual trepanation process is so documented in this small community.
